Corporate Environmental and Social Management System

Telecom Egypt has established and developed its own Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) which provides a systematic process of identification, assessment, and mitigation of environmental and social aspects (or hazards) to facilitate the avoidance or minimization of negative impacts (or risks) to the extent possible; while also promoting and realizing positive impacts for the workforce, the communities in which the business operates, and society as a whole, the ESMS is integrally compatible with ISO 9001:2015, ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 14001:2015 certificates obtained by Telecom Egypt.

The overall objective of the ESMS is to present a key corporate standard and implementation structure across Telecom Egypt (TE), which can be scaled down to the Project level and can result in continual improvement for the Company.

The ESMS is dynamic and continuously improved. It is initiated and supported by management and involves engagement between management, workers, third-party suppliers and contractors, and other stakeholders, including communities directly or indirectly affected by TE’s activities. The system allows Telecom Egypt to improve its environmental and social performance year-on-year and anticipate changes in the future through an ongoing process of planning, doing, checking, and acting all to ensure continuous improvement.

The goals of the ESMS are to:

  • Uphold compliance with all applicable laws and related regulations regarding the environmental and social aspects of its operations in all the geographies (and legal jurisdictions) in which they operate. Telecom Egypt expects all existing and prospective tenants on its platforms, its clients, and third parties acting on its behalf to comply with all applicable laws and regulations;
  • Ensure all activities and persons responsible anticipate and take action to avoid, as far as reasonably possible, adverse impacts or risks to workers, communities, and the environment.
  • Ensure that affected workers, communities, and other stakeholders are engaged on issues that could potentially affect them to gain positive support from these stakeholders, address feedback, appropriately address claims/grievances and anticipate and avoid social conflict; and
  • Promote and provide means for adequate engagement with affected communities throughout the lifecycle of the project on issues that could potentially affect them, and ensure that relevant ESMS information is disclosed and disseminated.

Fiber To The Home (FTTH) Deployment Project

As Egypt’s first telecommunications operator providing all telecom services, Telecom Egypt’s strategic direction includes not only enhancing and upgrading the country’s ICT infrastructure but also being part of the national roadmap to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by expanding FTTH services across Egypt.

This massive rehabilitation and improvement project comes as part of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology’s “Digital Egypt” strategy, whereby Telecom Egypt aims to transform all areas into FTTH networks, aligning with Egypt’s Vision 2030 for a digitally transformed society and a robust digital economy.

Furthermore, Telecom Egypt is seeking to make the FTTH project compatible with its Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) by ensuring that all activities comply with well-defined standards and procedures in order to manage and mitigate any negative environmental and social impacts (or risks) to the extent practically possible, while also promoting and realizing the positive impacts.

Telecom Egypt’s ESMS is dynamic and continuously being improved and supported by the management to comply with the local laws & regulations, and societal norms, that enhance the internal and external socio-environmental aspects for the workforce, the communities in which the business operates, and society as a whole, resulting in enhanced organizational performance and increased shareholder value.
